Are you Being Molded by God?

A kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they drew. She would occasionally walk around to see each child’s artwork. As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was.

The girl replied, “I’m drawing God.” The teacher paused and said, “But no one knows what God looks like.”

Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the little girl replied, “They will in a minute.”

Just like this girl, we often try to make a God that fits our imagination. Even adults are guilty of this. From the beginning people have always wanted to put ‘a face to the name’ – give God a form by which to associate to Him. Even God’s people in the Old Testament, the Israelites, wanted an idol to worship in spite of God forbidding them to do so. In the New Testament, Jesus said in John 1:18, “No one has ever seen God” and in John 14:9, “Anyone who has seen me, has seen the Father”.

Also, we tend to describe God in a way that we want Him to be – always forgiving- never punishing, always giving-never expecting to receive, always blind to our fault, always loving and kind. We try to think that He will be blind to our faults. Even worse, we try to put the blame on Him. We misinterpret Scripture to conform to our modern cultural moral compass.

You probably would have heard many people say that God is Love and so He cannot punish us for our willful sins; we will not face any consequences for our sinful life! Do your parents love us? Of course they do! Do they punish us when we lie, cheat or are disrespectful? Of course they do! Why do they do it? So that we can change our ways and live right. The same holds true for God too.  For those who reject Him, there is a day of punishment coming soon. He chastises those who love Him and accept Him as their Savior, so that we can draw closer to Him.

Let us not seek to mould God into our likeness but let us seek to be molded in His likeness.  Read the Bible diligently and learn of it, pray earnestly asking God for guidance to live according to His will.
